Mission Teams
Mission work is a high priority and a vibrant part of Southminster and Saint Giles. Listed below, you
will see many ways to be involved in Mission. Mission donations and activities may change, as it
is a constantly evolving piece in the life of our church.
If mission work is a priority in your life, we invite you to join one of the Mission Action Teams. Or, if you
have a special calling in a certain area, you can create your own team. We support all those who
have a heart for mission and creative ideas to do God’s work in our own community or beyond.
You may join a team at any time. Teams meet at the discretion of the team leader, so you may or may
not have monthly meetings. You may choose to work on short-term projects or make long-term
commitments.
If you have questions about Mission, please contact Rev. Nancy Covington
Mission Team Descriptions
International Mission Team:
This team focuses on supporting those around the world who are in need. We maintain a close
connection with Malawi, especially in financial support of education. Some members of the
congregation have visited Malawi, and we have welcomed visitors from there. We also function as
a clearing house for Fair Trade products, such as coffee, tea and chocolate, which are sold at the
church and also distributed to other churches to sell. The Mission Team budgets money for
international donations to programs such as Evangelism & Literacy International. Each year, the
congregations participate in a holiday market to sell Fair Trade gift items (SERVV). One-time
donations and projects include a donation to the Microloans Program and volunteer participation
in the Shallow Wells Project in Africa.
National Mission Action Team:
This team responds to unexpected disasters in the United States, looking at ways to support efforts to
support and help those in need. We are also exploring the possibility of using the community
building as a Red Cross Disaster shelter, especially for individuals with handicaps. Our Youth
regularly participate in mission activities both locally and nationally.
Housing Action Team:
Saint Giles helps individuals who are living in nursing homes move to independent living. Rev. Bill
Webb is pastor of Saint Giles’ mission. Other opportunities in housing include participating in
Habitat for Humanity projects.
Health/Social Action Team:
Many local nonprofits receive monetary donations through the Mission Team. Most of these agencies
also receive donations of goods through the churches’ ongoing Feed My Sheep program, and
support through volunteers from the congregation. We also participate in providing and serving
two dinners per month at the Day Center for the Homeless. In addition, the Mission Team has
provided health/fitness activities such as a health fair, and the building is used as a Senior Center.
Education Action Team:
Marshall School, Partners in Education Members provide on-going support of Marshall School with a
variety of projects such as mentoring, providing holiday food baskets, books, test-proctoring,
teacher appreciation luncheons, etc.
Regular Church Mission:
The Mission Team also educates the congregation on the regular Presbyterian offerings throughout
the year. These include: The Christmas Joy Offering, the Peacemaking Offering, One Great Hour
of Sharing, and the Pentecost Offering. The Mission Team supports the mission of stewardship
giving through the Stewardship Committee.
