The office of the deacon, as set forth in Scripture, is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress. Southminister Deacons
Visitation Ministry The work of the Deacons is to assist and comfort the congregation and those members that may be in need of special attention or care.  All deacons are involved in calling on our homebound members, and communion is served to those who are homebound upon their request. The Deacons continue to expand and update a contact list of persons that need special care by working with staff and committees of Southminster and related groups such as the Prayer Chain.  This list changes rapidly but is vital to the mission of the Deacons.  It will continue to serve as a touchstone for the Deacons to serve the Congregation in the future. Service Ministry In addition to their mission of care, the Deacons have also arranged special events.  With the Oklahoma Blood Institute and the American Red Cross, the Deacons held two blood drives during the year.  They also continue to honor Southminster’s veterans, past and present. The Deacons also continue their “Angel Tree” at Christmas, providing gifts to the boys at Goodland in Hugo, Oklahoma. Care Giving The deacons arrange for receptions to be held following funerals.  The loose offering funds which are designated for the deacons are used to make a monthly donation to Meals on Wheels, to support the Pastor’s discretionary fund, and bereavement receptions. Flowers from the Sunday Service are delivered to members who are unable to attend services. The current deacons are: Class of 2016 Sharon Coffman Zach Kilburn Catherine Stow Carol Messer Class of 2017 Morgan Harkey Kay Phoenix Cindy Webb Joan Myers- Moderator Class of 2018 Lorna Jody Flippo Ellen Johnsen John Johnsen David Wulf
